Course Title: Medical Surgical I & Mental Health Nursing Course Code: NSG525 Clinical II Credit hours: 3.0 Clinical: 135 total hours (45 contact hours per credit) Description: This course is designed to develop application of the nursing process in the care of acutely and chronically ill patients, as well as patients with mental health disorders. The roles of medical- surgical and mental health nurses are examined across roles, including the role of coordinator of care transitions. Interprofessional collaboration is emphasized to enhance safe, quality nursing care in a variety of clinical settings. Clinical experiences integrate the concepts of caring, collaboration, communication, cultural sensitivity, community, and clinical judgment to facilitate the well-being of individuals and to prepare the student as a provider of care. In the clinical setting, students will care for patients with select medical, surgical, and/or mental health problems in various settings, demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiology and psychosocial dynamics, apply the nursing process, utilize information technology, interact with other health care professionals, and practice clinical decision making and critical inquiry while caring for culturally diverse, ill adults.
