Welcome Observers

Welcome Observers

Thank you for your interest in observing with UVA Community Health. Observers must be at least 16 years old. Some areas within the health system require a minimum of 18 years of age. Select hospital units, at their discretion, may choose to limit or not allow observers. Observations are observations only.

• Observers may not participate in any patient care.
• Observers must request their observation experience 30-45 days prior to its start date.
• Observations are limited to 16 hours.

Observation types

• Graduate Student Observer - a student in graduate school or planning to attend a graduate program
• Undergraduate Student Observer - a student in an undergraduate program or planning to attend an undergraduate program
• Pre-Secondary Student - a student currently in high school seeking career exploration

Ineligible observation types

• Students currently enrolled in any health care academic program where observation is required for academic credit. If you are a student, please refer to the Welcome Students page and follow the process for a clinical/nonclinical rotation request.

Required Information for your observer application

• Identify your preceptor and the location of your observation. Student programs does not facilitate preceptor placements.
• Verify the dates of your visit

Requirements after your application is approved

*** Required documents, assessments, and training materials can be accessed through ACEMAPP. If you encounter issues with ACEMAPP requirements, contact ACEMAPP support.

• Immunization records
• Completed online materials
• Electronically signed agreements

While observing at UVACH:

*** Always wear your student ID badge while at UVACH as an observer

• Arrange your schedule with your preceptor
• Always be accompanied by your preceptor while onsite
• Adhere to the dress code policy unless otherwise required by the department
• Do not report to any UVACH observation site if you are not feeling well

Apply for an observation at UVA Community Health

1. Log in to your ACEMAPP account or if you don't already have an account, create one here: Register for an ACEMAPP account **Do NOT create an account if this experience is for school credit. If this is for school credit, your school will need to create your account as you are considered a student and do not qualify as an observer: Visit the Welcome Students page for more info.

2. Click the appropriate link below to apply for your observer experience.

   • Apply as a Student Observer
   • Apply as a Minor Observer - A student under 18 years of age.

3. You will receive an email from ACEMAPP when your application is reviewed. If it is approved, you will then be able to complete all of UVA Community Health's onboarding steps inside your ACEMAPP account.
