Orientation - External Clinical Instructors and Site Visitor content

All faculty require an active ACEMAPP account and should be assigned to their scheduled clinical rotation in ACEMAPP. They are to be credentialed and compliant for the duration of their clinical rotation.
If a school is on boarding a new cohort faculty, the placement/course coordinator should submit a completed Clinical Instructor ID Request Form along with a current resume to Student Placement Office via email at least 30 days prior to start of clinical rotation for review and approval.

Please ensure that the Student Placement office receives a current copy of the faculty's resume as it will need to be reviewed by our leadership team for approval.

Upon approval, the cohort faculty will be assigned Faculty ID #s for computer access. Clinical Instructors who are Northside employees will continue to use their Employee ID #s. The clinical Instructors will be contacted by Student Placement Liaison with further instructions on credentialing and orientation requirements. Note: Computer access is only valid for 6 months. Returning cohort faculty are encouraged to notify us of their rotation assignment as soon as possible to ensure their access remains active.

New Clinical Instructors Orientation

All new clinical instructors (not including visiting faculty) are to complete the following orientation and classes in the order listed below in addition to all immunization and vaccines required:

1. Northside’s Clinical Instructor Badge and Access Card: This badge/access card will need to be picked up prior to the scheduled Clinical Documentation Classes. In Atlanta, badges and access cards may be picked up on or before the first day of the clinical documentation classes between 07:30 am - 17:30 am from the Student Placement Office located at 5780 Peachtree Dunwoody Rd, Suite 500, Atlanta, 30342. Please contact Student Hotline at 404-845-5577 when you arrive to pick up your badge and access card. In Cherokee, Forsyth, and Duluth & Gwinnett campuses, badges may be picked up from Human Resources Office. However, access cards must be picked up from Security Office. Both need to be picked up prior to the start of the clinical rotation. If you are an employee of Northside, you still need to get a Clinical Instructor’s badge with your Employee ID # however, if any additional access is required, it would be added to your current white access card.

2. Cerner Clinical Documentation: Classes are held online through a series of modules so that the faculty is able to navigate CERNER. Please note that non employees of Northside will not have charting access, they will be granted view only access

3. Department Unit Orientation (DUO): ALL new cohort faculty must complete this step. Faculty will contact the assigned unit’s clinician/designee to set up Cohort/Faculty Department Unit Orientation Checklist. The time of the orientation varies based on campus and specialty. It is preferred that you complete this step at least 2- 3 weeks before your actual clinical rotation's start date. The clinician on the unit will orient you to the unit and its internal practices. In some cases, new faculty may shadow a nurse for one shift, and subsequently, the nurse will observe faculty on another shift. Faculty should follow the directives of the unit's clinician regarding obtaining their patient assignment. Faculty should attend the shift change reporting in the morning with their students. Returning faculty who are assigned to a new unit must be oriented to the unit. Department Unit Orientation expires annually. 4. Medication Administration:Cohort clinical faculty are exempt from administrating and overseeing the administration of medications. However, their students may administer medication under the direct supervision of the primary Northside Hospital nurse. The clinical faculty is to meet with the unit clinician and our Clinical Education Program Coordinators to review what medication may be administered by their students to review with them.

5. New Faculty Orientation (Scope of Practice): All new clinical instructors will be oriented on their scope of practice at Northside. The orientation will be scheduled with one of our Clinical Education Program Coordinators. Although we try to schedule it on the same day as department unit orientation, it is not always possible. This may take anywhere from 1-2 hours. This form needs to be turned into the Student Placement Office by following the guidelines on the form.

6. Department Unit Orientation (DUO): ALL cohort faculty and students must complete this step. Please see specific unit orientation checklists labeled by Cohort/Precepted rotation type Cohort/Faculty Department Unit Orientation Checklist and Precepted Department Unit Orientation Checklist. (Student Process): All new cohort clinical instructors are to meet/talk students and provide them with an overview of the unit. Faculty will complete this form on the first day they are on the unit with their students. This process may take anywhere from 1-2 hours depending on questions and concerns. This form needs to be turned into the Student Placement Office by following the guidelines on the form.

NOTE: Please note that although it may take a total of 4-5 days to complete faculty orientation, it usually takes about 2-3 weeks to complete all requirements. We have provided the New Faculty Orientation Checklist for you to keep track of requirements and scheduling. Please document the dates for each step and have it signed by your preceptor, who conducts the orientation/class instructor. Supporting documents should be emailed to patient.carestudents@northside.com.

NOTE: If a faculty as been inactive at Northside Hospital for greater than 12 months, they will be oriented as a new faculty.

NOTE: All Clinical Instructors must turn in their faculty badges with access cards at the end of their last rotation for the semester. Please return badges to the Education Coordinator or a designee at each campus. There will be a charge for a replacement badge and access card.
