Medical Education Observership Program

The Medical Education Observership Program at Grady Memorial Hospital is housed within the Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME). This is a unique opportunity for students, graduates, and healthcare professionals - both domestic and international- to gain firsthand exposure in a recognized high-performing urban hospital. Observerships are educational experiences designed to allow participants to shadow Grady’s Medical Staff Physicians or Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), such as Physician Assistants (PA), Anesthesiology Assistants (AA), Nurse Practioners (NP), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), and Certified Nurse Midwifes (CNM) across a wide range of specialties and departments.

Observers are strictly prohibited from direct patient care but are encouraged to engage in observational learning, including witnessing patient interactions, understanding clinical workflows, and attending educational sessions.

Program Goals:

  1. Provide exposure to clinical practice in a high-volume, urban hospital setting.
  2. Support career exploration and professional development.
  3. Enhance understanding of interdisciplinary healthcare delivery.
  4. Facilitate academic and professional networking.

Observership Eligibility: All observers must be 16 years or older, have a Medical Staff Physician or APP faculty sponsor confirmed before applying, and remain with their faculty sponsor and designated supervisor throughout their time at Grady.

Observer Categories: Participants must adhere to hospital policies and professional standards. Observers can be, but not limited to:

  • High School Students- the observership is separate from the TELP program or the Work-Based Learning program and requires parental/guardian signature
  • Pre-Clinical/Undergraduate/Graduate Student
  • International Medical Students, Graduates (Non-ACGME Residents and Fellows), or Practicing Physicians

Costs: Observership fees cover a four-week period (~30 days). Fees and requirements are based on this standard length and may not be adjusted for shorter observerships. Extensions (up to 90 days) require adjusted pricing and prior approval. After all initial application requirements are met, payments must be made to the Business Office (Room 1B024) in person or by phone at (404) 616-4321, Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:00pm. A copy of the receipt must be emailed to medicaleducation@gmh.edu.

  1. One-Day Observership: $25
  2. High School Student (Ages 16 and up): $100
  3. Pre-Clinical/Undergraduate/Graduate Student: $250
  4. International Medical Student, Graduates (Non-ACGME Residents and Fellows), or Practicing Physician: $1000

Applicants interested in a one-day observership must contact the Office of Graduate Medical Education by emailing the specific date they wish to come to Grady. The email should include the sponsor’s name and department in the body of the message, and the sponsor must be copied using their Grady, Emory, or Morehouse email address. Once the request is received, the observer will be sent the necessary requirements via email. These must be completed and returned to medicaleducation@gmh.edu. Please note that all observership requests are reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis

Application Process

Identify Sponsor- Applicants must determine an area of interest in healthcare and coordinate with medical staff or APPs from that department to have them agree to become a sponsor. Identify any additional medical staff that would be part of this supervision (if applicable).

ACEMAPP Application- Applicants will submit an inquiry to the Office of Graduate Medical Education. If accepted, the OME will send a link with the ACEMAPP application via medicaleducation@gmh.edu. Once the application is completed and pre-approved by the GME, a rotation will be created for applicants where they must complete all of the following requirements to become an observer.

  1. Complete Grady Training Modules
  2. Sign Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreement
  3. Sign and upload the Release & Waiver of Liability and Sponsor Agreement of Observership
  4. Download, complete and send the Grady Onboarding Health Packet and requirements to ehsonboarding@gmh.edu. An appointment with Employee Health is not required. Upload a copy of the completed packet in ACEMAPP for reference.
  5. Upload the Medical Evaluation Clearance received by Grady's EHS Onboarding
  6. Upload a Professional Digital Photo (for badge)
  7. Upload a valid Government- issued ID (e.g. Driver's License or Passport)
  8. Upload a CV/Resume
  9. Upload a copy of B1/B2 Visa (if applicable)

Payment- After all application requirements are completed, a non-refundable payment must be made to the Business Office and applicants must send a copy of the receipt to medicaleducation@gmh.edu

Rotation Approval- Before an observership can begin, all application requirements and payment must be completed to obtain approval of the rotation. After this final approval, the Office of Graduate Medical Education will contact observers with instructions on how to obtain their Grady badge. Observers are required to return their Grady badge to the Office of Graduate Medical Education at the end of the observership.

Completion of Observership- Observers may request a downloadable Certificate of Completion for their personal records from medicaleducation@gmh.edu. Completion of a post-program survey and return of the Grady badge are required to receive the certificate.
