Medicine in Psychiatry Services Program/Unit Descriptions

iMIPS/G-92 (CASAC) The iMIPS (Inpatient Medicine in Psychiatry Services) rotation places CASAC interns on a specialized inpatient unit that integrates full medical care within a behavioral health setting, serving adults with substance use disorders who present with withdrawal, post-overdose needs, medical complications from chronic use, or psychiatric symptoms related to substances. Interns learn to recognize withdrawal syndromes, use monitoring tools such as CIWA and COWS, identify medical red flags, differentiate between withdrawal, intoxication, delirium, and psychiatric symptoms, and observe MAT initiation. They also gain exposure to the medical complications of SUD, including hepatic, infectious, cardiovascular, and chronic health issues. The rotation provides insight into integrated team-based care, including buprenorphine inductions, methadone continuation, symptom-management medications, and harm-reduction approaches. Interns practice motivational interviewing and recovery-oriented engagement while observing collaboration among peers, social workers, and medical staff. They also learn the fundamentals of discharge planning, connecting patients to detox, rehab, MAT providers, mental health care, and community supports. Overall, the iMIPS rotation offers experience with complex co-occurring medical and psychiatric presentations and prepares CASAC interns to navigate the full continuum of SUD care.
