Hep B Information for New Students:
•Hep B is given to young children as a shot series that includes 3 vaccines
•More than 50% of young adults will have a negative Hep B titer meaning they do not have immunity to Hep B. This is true even though young children receive 3 Hep B shots before school age.
•Titers should be requested in quantave results. • When a negative titer is resulted, students will repeat the shot series of either 2 shots or 3 shots.
•The 2 shot series includes 2 Hep B booster vaccines given 4 weeks apart.
•The 3 shots series includes 3 Hep B vaccines. The second shot is given 4 weeks after the first shot and the third shot is given 5 months after the second shot.
•A final titer is drawn 4 weeks after the last shot is given. If the student can wait 6-8 weeks after the last shot is given, there is a greater chance that the final titer will be positive. Many times, the student does not have the schedule flexibility to wait more than 4 weeks to have the titer drawn.
•It may take a clinic 3-5 business days for the titer to be returned to the student.
•Students will upload a complete lab report of the Hep B titer plus all Hep B vaccines.
•If the student has two negative titers after following the correct time schedule of vaccines and titers, the student may request a declination waiver for the Hep B titer. This is writen by a physician and states that the student has received all Hep B vaccines; no further vaccines required or recommended; the student will not achieve positive immunity to Hep B; the student has been counseled on the risks associated.
